What the Fuss is All About
Sports massage is aimed at supporting and enhancing the bodies muscular system, helping the body stay injury free and enabling it to recover faster and train harder.
The techniques used in sports massage include deep tissue, trigger point therapy, myofascial therapy and dry needling.
A sports massage targets specific areas of the body such as knee, shoulder or back pain.
It works by:
Increasing blood flow to the area bringing much needed nutrients to damaged muscles and tendons.
Encouraging the flow of lymphatic fluid (the bodies waste disposal system) to the area, increasing the drainage of waste products and helping reduce inflammation.
Reducing the build up of scar tissue and encouraging the growth of healthy tissue.
You don’t have to be an elite athlete to benefit from a sports massage.
A sports massage is aimed at supporting anybody that plays sport, trains for specific events or just enjoys keeping fit at the gym.
Many small and seemingly insignificant aches and pains can become more serious if left unchecked.
Often trying to push through pain in a training session can have serious consequences resulting in torn tendons and ligaments.
Treating those small aches and pains with sports massage can prevent more serious injuries from occurring down the track.
When to use sports massage:
- In between training or gym sessions. This is aimed at restoring muscle condition by easing built up tension and re-establishing correct muscle balance within the body. The benefits enable the body to recover quicker from training sessions, allowing the body to train harder and push to new levels of fitness.
- After injury. Rehabilitation sports massage is aimed at restoring function and mobility to the injured area. It is also valuable in helping support the muscles that must work harder whilst one part of the body is injured. Sports massage can be used to reduce the severity of an injury within the first 48hrs
